As i've mentioned previously about choosing a professional for photography I'd like to further emphasize the importance of hiring a professional, skilled, and talented makeup artist for your wedding day. Cheap doesn't always mean better, you can tell from the application process and the longevity of your makeup. 9/10 of my clients KNOW that their makeup is not moving unless they scrub away. Sounds pretty harsh, this I know, however on a day like this you and your bridal party are being photographed from so many different angles. You're moving and shaking from sun up to sun down. Makeup {to me, and the majority of my MUA colleagues} deem our business UBER IMPORTANT.

I've had several brides not book me because of price and while I can appreciate their attempt to be budget friendly, hiring someone who will do your face for $50 just might not get you the final result you desire. Here are some tips;

1. Plan ahead and do your research. A good makeup artist will be booked before you say yes to his proposal {yes i am so serious}
2. Have trials done with as many artists needed until you get the look you want, but remember to take photos b/c you might not remember what each person did.
3. As hard as it is sometimes, encourage your bridal party to get their makeup professionally applied as well. You will NOT regret this in your photos. If you know money is an issue, maybe this can be your "thank you" gift to them for being part of your special day
4. Enjoy it! It's so EXCITING to get dolled up by a professional. But listen to them when they advise you on certain things that may or may not look right. At the end of the day, we do what you ASK us to do, so when you are unsatisfied with the result, remember that this is what you've asked for. I am one of THOSE MUA's that will advise you on what to do and what not to do according to your face frame, lip shape, coloring etc, b/c it's my job!

Just remember I don't let you out of my chair until I am 100% satisfied with your look and feel you are at your most beautiful! It takes time...but it's so worth it!

Back in May I had the pleasure of returning back to the FABULOUS Palace at Somerset Park. I absolutely love and adore this venue. It's so regal and grand..what girl wouldn't love it.

Like most brides that know what they want for makeup, Blythe was right in that same category and what she didn't want was DRAMA!!!! She requested a simple look but something that would make her look like the most glamorous version of herself. That was an easy task because I personally think Blythe is a stunner naturally.

Anyone in business will tell you that referrals are the best form of new business, and it really helps keep you afloat. I don't know where Gloss and Shadow would be if it weren't for some of the AMAZING referrals i've received over the years. A referral is simply more than someone telling someone about who you are, it's the sheer notion that a client thoroughly enjoyed your services and was willing to share that with someone else in need.

Courtney is a hair stylist, she is in the business and knew what she wanted. She came to me with a very clear vision of how she wanted to look. HOT....SMOKIN HOT with a smokey eye in a variety of shades of brown.

As for the bridesmaids, some liked it smokey and some liked it natural...either way we delivered what they wanted successfully and everyone looked stunning.

I love all of my brides, truly I do. And I mean that in the sincerest form. A lot of my past brides are UBER-ORGANIZED and the planner in my loves that and appreciates it.

Shannon was another bride who knew exactly what she wanted. Wasn't afraid to tell me what she liked, hated and everything in between. Call me crazy, but that's pretty awesome to me.

Shannon was a DREAM on her day. She was the epitome of a smoking hot bride, hands down! I really enjoyed myself working with her and her bridal party that day.

Dating Back to March: Mrs. Daychy Rodriguez

There is one thing that I love about being a makeup artist, and that's when you have a client that KNOWS what she wants and isn't afraid to ask for it!

Daychy and I hit it off the minute she came in for her trial. She had been to several other MUA's and wasn't satisfied in the least bit with how her makeup turned out...until she came to me.

I was so happy that she LOVEDDDDD her makeup. My AMAZING assistant Janna and I arrived to her home and took Daychy and her Bridesmaids from Level 1 to Level 10.

Hi Everyone!

Long time no read!!! Just wanted to update my blog b/c it's has been quite the hectic couple of months. I am so blessed to have worked on so many amazing brides, bridesmaids and mother of the bride {and grooms} and this is my outlet to showcase the beautiful work i've done.

Lots have happened over the past couple of months

I GOT MARRIED

Yes, on July 22nd I married my sweetheart and have been in wedded bliss ever since BUT I haven't stopped working. Free weekends don't really exist to me and i love it. the rush of joy i get from waking up on a Friday or Saturday morning to go into someone's home or hotel room and share such a special moment with them is priceless to me. I've been told by quite a few brides that I am so calming to be around and I LOVE THAT. Who wants a frantic makeup artist??? I SURE DIDN'T

Anyways I have LOADS of pictures coming your way. It's such an exciting time for me and I am thrilled that you are all so anxious to see what Gloss and Shadow has been up to.

Remember when I blogged about Celest? Well I didn't have the professional images that I wanted to showcase just how beautiful Celest and her bridal party were. I mean just great skin, full pouty lips on every face {that's pretty rare} and all around FUN to be around! I loved working with her and creating her into this vision of a bride. Celest knew that she wanted a smokey eye {but not drag queenish} and a light nude lip. I love it when a bride is not afraid to take a risk and go for the dramatic look vs. the typical "bride" look {which i do love as well} but it's so much fun vamping someone up for the big day! I want to thank my assistant for the day Gloria for helping this bridal party look extra glossy and chic! {WARNING long post ahead}

And at the tail end of the night the Bride and her Maid of Honor still looked AMAZING

My Brooklyn Bride Betsy

During the summer I received a phone call from Betsy who was looking for the perfect makeup artist to be apart of her glam squad for her September 11th nuptials. She shared a story with me about how one of her friends was in a wedding and the bride {who didn't use me for makeup} was upset that she didn't while her bridal party looked super glam! {Thx for the compliment...my pleasure}

I trouped it to the beautiful area of Park Slope for Betsy's makeup trial and we hit it off immediately. Betsy doesn't wear lots of makeup, and she {like many modern twenty something yr old women} sticks to the same beauty regimen. The minute I saw her I was inspired because she is a replica of Anne Hathaway with a smidge of Audrey Hepburn.

So it was simple! Matte classic eye, heavy liner on the lid, soft glossy rose lip!And her my dear friends is Betsy

I absolutely adore this picture because this was right after her bridal party, mother and myself told her that her eyeliner was perfect. She wanted to remove it just a bit and we all told her "NO" she was a total good sport about it

Back in the middle of the summer Cathy Scerbo of www.ForYourEventPlanning.com emailed and asked me if I would do her makeup for her baby shower. I was THRILLED and immediately said yes!!!

Cathy wore a beautiful white shimmery dress with tons of jewels on the neckline. We didn't want to go with anything to bold that wouldn't make her look like herself. The look we went for was soft and summery with a touch of pink/peach to bring out her skin tone. Check it out

Building an Empire

Building an Empire is what I am doing at this point in my life. I am so grateful and fortunate to have had the experience to work with the people i've worked with in my 4 years in the business. Being a makeup artist is not just something I am experimenting with or doodling in I AM SERIOUS ABOUT MY CRAFT. Business is rolling in the for 2010/2011 season and I am completely happy!

Happy Holidays Everyone! Yes I have been MIA, enjoying my family and friends during the holidays but I haven't forgotten about my readers. On December 4th I flew to Cancun, Mexico to celebrate the wedding festivities of a near and dear friend of mine. She is actually more like my family! Yolanda (Yolie) as we all know her, married her sweetheart Jorge on the beautiful Playa Mujeres side of Cancun. I cannot even begin to tell you how much FUN I had and how beautiful this bride was. I know I ALWAYS say that my brides are beautiful but I just can't help it because they really ARE THAT BEAUTIFUL. Yolie gave me free range to just make her look FAB! We didn't even have a trial and for you OCD brides out there you know how nervewrecking this could be. I decided to play up her tan, and her beautiful features. When it was all said and done, my darling Mexican bride resembled the beauty of one of the Kardashian sisters but EVEN BETTER!
Yolie I wish you and Jorge a lifetime of happiness, love and laughter and I thank you for hiring me to be your makeup artist and share such a special day with you. I love you both!

Something to be excited about...

Tonight at 10:00pm EST a new episode of the new hit wedding reality show "Master's of Reception" the work of Gloss and Shadow will be featured on bride Jackie and 3 of her beautiful bridesmaids. I cannot wait for this show to air to get a glimpse at how fabulous these ladies looked. Jackie requested a very natural, beach-esqe themed look with lots of bronzer, light lids, a coral lip and WOW false lashes to bring some fabulosity to it all.
The entire bridal party (including the bride) donned classic evening gowns designed by Amsale in a slate blue color. I had so much fun working with this group of women and I wish Jackie all the best of luck in her marriage!!!!

I met Alaina through her husband Tom with whom I went to high school with. Alaina and Tom were married on Friday 8.14.09 at The Bridgewater Manor in NJ. Alaina came to me for her trial back in April and she knew she wanted a smokey eye, and she wanted to knock Tom off his socks. I think she did that and more, with how STUNNING she was on wedding day! I had such a wonderful time working on her canvas. Take a look at how fab she was!!! Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Beezy! I hope you're enjoying your Mexican honeymoon!

OMG...Lashes Lashes Lashes!!!!

I frequent a lot of blogs from various MUA's (makeup artists) across the USA. I came across a site www.makeupbyrenren.com and uses RedCherry/Bliss lashes quite frequently. Apparently I was missing out on the secret and sticking to what I knew which was Ardell and MAC lashes which can run you a pretty penny when you're purchasing them in bulk like I do. The lashes are 100% natural and they're amazing!!!! Let me break it down for my glossy girls like this... MAC lashes can run you $11.00 and up, Ardell will run you $3.99 and up BUT Red Cherry lashes are $1.49 to $1.99 (unless you order the specialty ones) that's a bargain that no MUA can pass up especially when they give both Ardell and MAC lashes a true run for their money!! I ordered over 30 pair today and I cannot wait to receive them in the mail. I advise all my brides to at least try false lashes because no matter what they're going to intensify your eye makeup and make you stand out even more but in a GOOD way!! Thanks Ren for keeping us updated on where to get this product

On Friday I schlepped my way up to North Haledon to don the faces of 6 Dominican beauties. The wedding of Jeannette was absolutely stunning. It was a very emotional time because her sisters and mother couldn't stop crying and it was so sweet to see just how attached they were to the bride. Jeannette has a very natural exotic look so we played up her eyes and gave her a gorgeous coral pink lip. I have to wait to get the professional pics from her photographer but I just couldn't wait to show how gorgeous she was and how radiant she became once the gown was put on. Felicidades Jeannette!!!

On Saturday about 15 of my sorority sisters and I road tripped to Boston for a baby shower for one of our dear friends Miluz. The hostess requested me to come a bit earlier to make Miluz look picture perfect for her event. It was such a blast catching up with her and getting to make her look even more radiant than she already was. We used deep bronzers, corals, oranges pinks and golds for her look. Isn't she glowing?? I can't wait to see Baby Jaida...Congrats Miluz!!!

Nicki was married at the gorgeous, trendy and uber chic Liberty House which overlooks the Manhattan Skyline. Since our very first trial I told Nicki that she reminds me so much of the fabulous Anne Hathaway and once she put that beautiful Romona Keveza gown on she looked like she could walk the red carpet.

My hair is dark, my skin is light caramel with a touch of italian creme (hey it sounds good right), with an dark - amber colored eye. The god's are truly shining on me (lol)

I get so many requests when doing bridal makeup for celebrity looks. Specifically those of Carrie Underwood, J. LO, Eva Medes, Oprah, and Vanessa Williams. Well ladies, now you can go and research some of the products they use without haveing to spend a fortune. Beauty is wonderful but with today's economoy we can still be FABULOUS on a budget.

Dennise was married on August 2, 2008 in Tenafly, NJ. She is my second youngest bride at 24yrs old marrying her college sweetheart of 5yrs. Dennise was a pleasure to work with ladies. So calm and relaxed. As a woman who doesn't wear much makeup, she wanted to be a GLAMAZON on her wedding day...I think the look was accomplished. Congratulations Dennise, I hope you both enjoyed Hawaii!!!

I've been pretty busy

Hey Everyone,

So these past two weekends have been relatively busy for me. On July 18th I hustle and bustled my way through 1.5 hours of traffic to Basking Ridge NJ for Carol's wedding. Carol is one of my sorority sisters and she hired me a while back to make her glamourous for her BIG day. Carol is a go getter and was was very decisive of the look she wanted. She doned a beautiful dutchess satin Jim Hjelm mermaid style gown with flowing curls and a pendant that SCREAMED vintage. I'll be sure to post a picture of that when I get the proof from the fabulous photographer...The Bleu Studio (Englewood, NJ)...I only have one pic so far and here it is...more to come

Memorial Day Sunrise

On Saturday May 24th, I had the pleasure of travelling to central NJ to help in the preparations for Kim's Wedding. Her and her family were such a pleasure to work with and she made a GORGEOUS bride. Her bridesmaids wore a color they called "coffee with cream", Kim wore a Pnina Tornai (of course I had to ask), the fabulous Michelle LoConte on hair, and CLB Photography were on the scene capturing the moments.

Trial with Ms. D

Ms. D came to me last night for a trial. She is getting married in July and had no idea of what she wanted except for the fact that she loved the look of a smokey eye. I used about 5 different products on her eyes. Lashes from Ricky's in NYC, MAC paint in sublime, and of course Black Tied eye shadow. For secrets sake she asked me not to post the full view of her face because she wanted the whole look to be a surprise (just in case I have any lurkers)

I've been doing makeup for quite some time now, about 4 years to be exact. It started as a hobby and bloomed into a business that I know and love.
